Michael Quane's practice is focused on drawing on paper and carving of stone. Fundamental to his sculptural process is an awareness of gravity as a persistent presence in the physical world. This awareness extends past considerations of balance and form to the notion that metaphysically, gravity is the medium through which we swim and geologically and astronomically, it imposes order on what would otherwise be a chaotic universe. It is an invisible force that shapes the planets and fuses stars, maintains orbits, and governs galaxies. These notions are explored in his recent series Gravity Swimmers.
Michael Quane, born in 1962, lives and works in County Cork. He has exhibited throughout Ireland, UK, Western Europe, and the US. His work is present in private and public collections throughout. He is a member of Aosdána and was elected a full Member of the RHA in 2004.
