Written by Belfast playwright Marie Jones, ‘A Night In November’ stars award-winning actor William Lyons as Kenneth McAlister, a working-class Protestant, during a fateful night in November, 1993 in Belfast when the Republic of Ireland soccer team plays against Northern Ireland in a World Cup qualifier. As the game progresses, Kenneth finds himself watching the crowd more than the football — and exposing his Anti-Catholic bigotry.

Thought provoking and hilarious, this play has wowed audiences all around the world and is one of the best pieces of theatre written in Ireland in the past 30 years.

In 2009 William Lyons won the best actor award at the All-Ireland Drama Festival in Athlone and prior to the final had won 7 best actor awards on the festival circuit

TOM FRENCH

Tom French is one of the most interesting poets to emerge in Ireland in the last few years. He was born in Kilkenny in 1966 and raised across the border in Tipperary. He received a bursary in literature from An Chomhairle Ealaíon/The Arts Council, Ireland in 1999, and his fi rst collection ‘Touching the Bones’ (Gallery Press, 2001) was awarded the Forward Prize for First Collection 2002. His second collection ‘The Fire Step’ was published in October 2009. Tom will read from both collections tonight – the general theme is ‘The Things That Leave Us Breathless and Horizontal’.

LEANNE O’SULLIVAN

Leanne O’Sullivan was born in 1983, and comes from the Beara peninsula in West Cork. She received an MA in English from University College, Cork in 2006. The winner of several of Ireland’s poetry competitions, including the Seacat, Davoren Hanna and RTE Rattlebag Poetry Slam, she has published two collections, both from Bloodaxe, ‘Waiting for My Clothes’ (2004) and ‘Cailleach: The Hag of Beara’ (2009). She is the recipient of the 2009 Ireland Chair of Poetry bursary.

“What is remarkable about Leanne O’Sullivan is not that she is so young but that she dares to write about exactly what it is to be young. A teenaged Virgil, she guides us down some of the more hellish corridors of adolescence with a voice that is strong and true. For that alone, she deserves our full attention.” American Poet, Billy Collins

Protestant Minister, piper, Gaelic scholar and Trinity College professor; James Goodman, straddled two very different cultures in 19th century Ireland but it is the vast collection of tunes he transcribed from piper, Thomas Kennedy which James Goodman will be remembered for. Over120 years since his death, the extensive collection of traditional tunes he collected are still being consulted, read and studied by musicians and scholars today.

Produced by Dingle production company Sibeal Teo, this is the defi nitive fi lm on Canon Goodman and is an excellent introduction to his life and work. Filmed in and around Skibbereen, West Kerry and Dublin it contains insightful interviews and superb performances by Laoise Kelly, Steve Cooney, Mick O Brien, and Peter Browne among others.
This film is presented by Skibbereen Historical Society and will be introduced by local historian Jim Byrne. Jim now resides in the rectory in which Canon Goodman lived.

WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID PUTTNAM

Join us again this year in the atmospheric grounds of Abbeystrewery Church for our outdoor movie night! This year we are delighted to have David Puttnam to introduce his classic 1983 movie, Local Hero. Peter Riegert is Mac, the Houston businessman flown to the fictional Highlands fishing village of Ferness to negotiate a deal with the locals to buy their land – land wanted by his eccentric boss (Burt Lancaster) to use as a North Sea oil base. Having found more friends within this tiny population than a lifetime in the big city, and captivated by the beautiful beachside surroundings, Mac soon fi nds himself not wanting to leave. The villagers, meanwhile, have more than a few surprises tucked up their sleeves.

This story is about capitalism at work, one of many expectations to be turned on its head as the tale unfolds!
* Sincere thanks to David Puttnam for his permission to screen Local Hero tonight.
* Proceeds from this evening’s events will go to charity.
* Remember to wrap up warm – bring a warm jacket and a hot fl ask – summer nights can be chilly!

In his writings, and particularly, in ‘The Third Policeman’, Flann O’Brien took scientific principles, extrapolated them to fantastic proportions, and set the outcomes in a bizarre context that is at once both logical and illogical

In his writings, and particularly, in ‘The Third Policeman’, Flann O’Brien took scientific principles, extrapolated them to fantastic proportions, and set the outcomes in a bizarre context that is at once both logical and illogical. Written in 1940, but not published until after the author’s death in 1967, the story follows the trail of a murderer on the run through an Irish countryside that is not as we know it. In this setting, the narrator is continually challenged by scientific processes that we normally take for granted such as the relationship between light and time, the Conservation of Energy, and perhaps most famously, the Molecule Theory. His most infamous description relates to how molecular theory contributes to the production of a being that is part-Garda, part-bicycle (and vice-versa).

In this exciting two-man show, where travel is an illusion and a pint of plain is your only man, the comic world of Flann O’Brien is prised open by DCU Chemistry Professor Dermot Diamond and actor Fergus Cronin.

The International World of Elvis Clones, Look-a-likes, Impersonators and Tribute Artists is quite a sight to behold,
there are thousands from places as far off as Australia, India, Norway, UK and of course The USA, well we have our own here in Ireland..
He is known as The Emerald Elvis after he appeared at the 2002 World Elvis Festival in Canada dressed in an outfit that would be more akin to Michael Flatley..
An Elvis Jumpsuit with Irish Dancing Costume designs all over it, and bejewelled with Swarzsky Crystals from Nashville…
“I just wanted to shock the Americans with something different” said Mark Leen on Fox news who were covering the event.. he finished a credible 4th…
but this boy can sing… he is classed as one of the closest sound-a-likes to Elvis in the world, he is the voice of a 200,000 selling Talking Elvis Clock,
He has sold over 14,000 seats to the spectacular I.N.E.C. in Killarney and even sold out our own Cork Opera House on Six Occassions…
Elvis Presleys own step brother David Stanley was so impressed with this Irish Elvis he joined him on stage for Johnny B Goode in Blackpool at one of Mark Leens concerts, adding, Mark is the best ive heard at getting the nuances of Elvis easy laid back character and vocal style, he reminds me of my brother in so many ways, just by being himself….
Quite a compliment, and one echoed by other Elvis band mates like The Sweet Inspirations and The Imperials Gospel Quartet, and Mark has seen a few dreams come true in his illustrious career, He has performed for President Bill Clinton on his Golf trip to Ballybunion, he has had Vernon Kaye round to stay in his Elvis themed home complete with Exact replica Gates of Graceland, famous audience members have included Daniel O Donnell and even Van the Man… Ken Doherty calls him “my favourite entertainer”
He reworked Return to sender for a you tube video to shout his No to the Lisbon Treaty views and it garnered 9000 plays in just a week.
Ann Robinson host of the weakest link said she enjoyed her scarf and kiss from Emerald Elvis and it seems that he is one of the few Elvis Tribute Acts to make a good career out of paying tribute to the late great king of rock n roll.
He is a non drinker/non smoker a devout Catholic and is a daily attendee at Mass, but the contradiction is that he pulls up in a genuine 1956 Caddillac from time to time.
He has a wadrobe that would shame Naomi Campbell and Jewellry that could outshine Liberace, and if your thinking of booking him for your mothers party, you may want to be well healed, he arrives at shows in his own stretch Limousine..
And what of all these excesses? Vanity? or is he really as good as all that?
well he has been voted consistently in the top 5 Elvis acts in the world, was European Champion 3 times 2001, 2002, 2004 and is working on an original album with legendary Queen producer David Richards…
If your an Elvis fan you are however going to be in a Blue Suede Heaven and he is appearing on July 27th in West Cork to rock n roll the night away and give out a few of those highly collectable Scarves drenched in sweat and Prada aftershave.
